We’re honored to share our latest installation created in collaboration with the Penn State Arboretum.
On view May 1–17 at The Overlook Pavilion, this seasonal floral installation was designed and arranged by our team at Rooted Farmstead. The work reflects what we value most—intentional design, seasonal rhythm, and responsible sourcing at every stage of the process.
A key part of this installation was our commitment to local and responsible sourcing. The majority of plant material was thoughtfully sourced from regional growers and suppliers to build a diverse, seasonal palette. Live potted plants were selected from trusted local nurseries including Hilltop Hollow Nursery in Bellefonte, Hilltop Farms in Bellefonte, and College Gardens in State College, PA.
Natural moss elements were sourced from Pennsylvania-based Moss Acres, adding organic texture while maintaining a regional footprint. Cut flowers were intentionally selected for quality and sustainability, including Fair Trade roses, Pennsylvania-grown snapdragons, and other domestically grown greens and vines. Even materials harvested on-site at The Arboretum - such as fallen branches and pussy willow - were incorporated for a truly context sensitive design.
Sustainability was also central to the construction of the installation itself. No single-use traditional floral foam was used. Instead, we relied on reusable and lower-impact design mechanics such as curly willow structural cages and reusable zip ties, allowing us to build form and scale while minimizing waste.
The result is an installation that reflects not only the beauty of seasonal florals, but also the responsibility we feel as designers working with living materials. Every stem, structure, and surface was chosen with intention—balancing design impact with environmental care.
If you visit the Arboretum during the installation period, we hope you’ll take a moment to experience it in person and tag us in your photos @rootedfarmstead!
