Mark and Christie are first-generation farmers who transplanted to Central PA from the Philadelphia suburbs in 2014.
After a few years into our careers, we had become what most would consider "successful" but like many others, we found ourselves unfulfilled, working long, unpredictable hours at the expense of our health and relationships.
When we decided it was finally time for a change, it only made sense to set our sights on pursuing new careers in a region that always brought us joy - Centre County, Pennsylvania. Mark had been attending Penn State Football games since birth and Christie spent many summer nights at a family camp in Snow Shoe.
One year after renting in State College settling into our new jobs, we thought it was time to "put down some roots" and find "maybe an acre or two for the dogs..."
Through an unlikely string of events, and with little agricultural background, we found ourselves the proud owners of a 14 acre former dairy farm a short drive from Penn State. Shortly after, Mark proposed in the Barn in June of 2015 kickstarting the restoration so we could host our own wedding in July 2016.
Since then we have offered our beautifully restored barn as a wedding venue to some of the most amazing couples, including Mark's sister in 2018. At the time our crop production was focused on upscale produce for local restaurants, but we wanted to set aside a small patch to grow her wedding flowers to make her day even more special. All it took was one short growing season for ourselves, and our community, to get hooked on the dream of Rooted Farmstead being a thriving flower farm.
Thanks for following us on this journey!
